Michelle Greenfield

A long-time solar power and sustainability advocate, Michelle Greenfield is the co-owner and CEO of Third Sun Solar, LLC.  Third Sun is a solar power developer and contractor providing green power in Ohio and throughout the Midwest and is a Certified B Corporation, operating as a business for the greater good of the planet and its people. Founded in 2000, Third Sun has spent 19 years installing hundreds of clean energy systems for homes, businesses, and institutions. Third Sun Solar has the distinction of being an “Inc. 500/5000” fastest growing private company for 5 years in a row, as well as a Certified B Corporation with a commitment to not just profit, but also to the planet, employees, and the community.

Prior to her ownership of Third Sun, she was a VISTA volunteer in 1994, and led a successful community-wide organizing effort to charter the Appalachian Development Federal Credit Union (ADFCU). The ADFCU was a federal community development credit union (CDCU) which served the low-income community of Southeastern Ohio. After the successful charter, Michelle served as the ADFCU’s Manager and then on the Board of Directors. Michelle has currently leveraged her credit union experience towards organizing and directing the new Clean Energy Federal Credit Union (CECU). She serves on the Board of Directors of CECU which specializes in lending nationwide for solar PV systems, electric vehicles and green home improvement projects.

Concurrent to her past work with the ADFCU, Michelle also worked with several small business development and finance non-profits in Athens County. In these roles, she set up and managed a “mini” loan fund as well as other loan pools and provided underwriting for micro-enterprise loans to low-income entrepreneurs. Michelle has served on several Boards of directors, including as a member and past president of Green Energy Ohio (GEO), the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce, the Appalachian People’s Action Coalition, the CECU and the ADFCU (mentioned above). She has a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Miami University and a Master’s Degree in International Affairs from Ohio University with a focus on Economic Development.

For fun, Michelle is an avid yogi and teaches yoga and mindfulness in her community. She also loves to snowboard, road and mountain bike, spend time in the forests and mountains, read and travel.  She is the mother of 2 great young men, ages 22 and 20, and is married to Geoff, her partner in life, business and all things adventurous.
